2023 is Haven House's 50th anniversary.
That is five decades of helping youth experiencing homelessness, youth in a crisis or having trouble at school or home, and/or youth who are involved with the juvenile justice system. They help more than 1,200 youth each year across 10 programs.
Unfortunately, their services are more in demand than ever. The lack of affordable housing and the high cost of gas, food, childcare, etc. means that more youth and families are struggling with housing insecurity. In addition, the pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of our youth, resulting in staggering increases in the number of youth dealing with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
Haven House is responding to these challenges by hiring additional clinical staff, launching an outpatient mental health therapy program, and adding additional clinical support across programs. They are screening all youth at intake to determine if there are social determinants of health needs (housing, transportation, food, etc.), knowing these must be addressed to help our youth and families succeed. Their youth crisis shelter and 24/7 crisis line, Street Outreach program, and rapid re-housing program are helping youth ages 10-24 meet their basic needs and find safe, supportive living environments.
